Dublin, 9th of February 2024
Alfa Medics, a leading family practice in Dublin (with 3 clinics in Artane, Mulhuddart, and Northside Coolock) is issuing a vital public health alert regarding the local community’s escalating risk of measles cases. With a surge in reported instances across Ireland, Alfa Medics underscores the critical importance of vaccination and awareness to combat this highly contagious disease.
The HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre was notified yesterday, 8th of February 2024 of the death of an adult with confirmed measles, which took place in a hospital in the Dublin and Midlands Health Region. This is the first confirmed measles case notified in Ireland in 2024.
Dr Angela Parvu, Principal GP at Alfa Medics, emphasizes the urgent need for preventative measures to curb the spread of measles.
„Measles is a highly infectious virus that can have serious complications, especially among vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems”, states Dr Angela Parvu. ”Vaccination remains the most effective method of protection against measles and its potentially severe consequences.”
The same topic was discussed by Dr Angela this week in a meeting with the Irish College of General Practitioners when it was mentioned a serious drop in the vaccination rate. National uptake in Ireland is less than 90% for the last 2 years.
Irish Medical Organisation would recommend that people born in Ireland before 1978 are likely to be immune. Others can be vaccinated. If not sure of the vaccination stations, it is ok to proceed to vaccinate if no contraindications. “Where the vaccination history is unknown GPs may administer both original and/or booster vaccines”, added Dr Angela.
Alfa Medics urges all patients to take the following precautions:
In light of the current outbreak, Alfa Medics urges all patients to take the following precautions:
- Ensure vaccination. Verify that you and your family members are up-to-date on measles vaccinations. The MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine is safe, readily available, and highly effective in preventing measles infection.
- Stay informed about measles symptoms and transmission routes. Seek medical attention promptly if you suspect measles or have been in contact with an infected individual.
- Practice hygiene. Maintain good hygiene practices, including regular handwashing with soap and water, to reduce the risk of viral transmission.
- Avoid exposure. Isolate! Minimize contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms of measles and refrain from attending gatherings or public events if you suspect you may be infected.
Alfa Medics remains committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of the Dublin community through proactive healthcare initiatives and education. For further information or to schedule a vaccination appointment, please contact Alfa Medics at (+353) 1 847 4388.
Together, let us take decisive action to stem the tide of measles and protect our communities from this preventable disease.
To note: Measles, characterized by fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash, poses a significant threat to public health when left unchecked. Complications can range from ear infections and pneumonia to encephalitis (swelling of the brain), leading to long-term disabilities and serious consequences.
